What
is right view?
Right understanding or view means
correct understanding, the best understanding it is true but it is not no half
true or false . if it is less than our best then it is not right understanding
. this means that each one of us must
try hard to get a really good understanding of the Buddha’s path. If we fail
to make a good start, then we are like
the man lost in the desert.
Right View supports wisdom. Wisdom in this sense is the
understanding of things as they are, as explained in the teachings of the Four
Noble Truths. This understanding is not mere intellectual understanding. It is
instead a thorough penetration of the Four Noble Truths.
For example, last us pretend we have
just bought a moter car and have filled the tank with petrol. They are new and
the motor car has plenty of oil. We have a road map and know very well where we
wish to go. There is only one thing to keep us from starting our trip at once .
we do not know how to drive and until we gain the proper understanding of how
to drive, the car is useless to us. If we try to drive without knowing how , we
place ourselves in great danger. It is alos like this with the eightfold path.
Unless we first get right understanding we cannot make right use of the other
seven points.
It is
important to understand that the Eightfold Path is not a series of progressive
steps to be mastered one after another. Each of the steps is to be developed
and practiced together with the other steps, because they all support each
other. Strictly speaking, there is no "first" or "last" step
then we can understand clearly the right view.
