1.       Spired of Buddhism during the time of the Buddha. 

During the Buddha life time , Buddhism sprite in several important places in India. At the time Buddhism was not confined (limit area)  to the limits of mijjhimadesa. It travelled outside its boundary. It had thus a rapid progress. Towards the east it had spread to madhura and to the north to the land of the kuru. Before that advent ( higher) of Buddhism Brahmanism was the leading religion of country but the Buddha’s commanding personality, his simple method of preaching , his miraculous power and new ideas in his religion played so significant role in the mind of the people of the then India that they gave up their old  religions and philosophical ideas and embraced  ( love) the new religion on the Buddha. The accepted his religion and contributed to its development. Here is given below the names of several places where in the time of Buddha Buddhism prevailed.

Kasi=   Important place after enlightenment of buddha where he first and second discourse the  Dhmmacakkapavattana and Anattalakkhana to Pancavaggiya.
Rajagaha= The kingdom of Magadaha rajagaha, Gaya, Uruvela and Nalanda were the most important places were the buddha carried on his missionary work. The king Bimbisara, offered his Bambu grove pleasure garden to the buddha for the establishment of first Buddha vihara .
Gaya and Uruvela= Gaya became famous as an important center of Buddhism . the buddha also converted the jatila  at Uruvela.
Nalanda= although it was a small palce it was influential and prosperous (successful). People were worshippers of the buddha. Buddha recently visited. Sariputta, his famous disciple met him and they had at talk on the subject of the lineage (relationship of oldest people ) of faith. After buddha pass away Nalanda became one of the important Buddhist centers.
Kosala= under the influence of mallika, the queen and  soma and sakula ,his two sisters king Pasenadi  kosala took keen interest in Buddhism. Buddha discourse on the merits and demerits of good and evil deeds.  
savatthi= anathapindika offered garden of prince jeta and became jatavana vihara here buddha spent nineteen vasa and give discourse consisting of eighit hundred and forty four sutta.
Kapilavatthu= king Suddhodana, at first time all people were unwilling to welcome to buddha , refused to give him accommodation at night that is why he stayed at the hermitage of bharandu-kalama . later those all became buddhists.
Vesali= capital of licchvi faced a great famine and pestilence and buddha recited the ratana sutta the people became happy buddha also praised them and spoke about their seven conditions of national well fare.  
Kusinara and pava= kusinara a small town  of group of malla  other one ruled from pava which as center of Jainism. Two mallas revived buddha teaching . at the kusinara buddha delivered several discourses regarding the results of the spiritual practices and became many Buddhist monks.
Avanti= Mahakaccayana , the son of canda pajjota and his friend went to Berares to meet buddha and became Buddhist monks after came back built two monastery . udena of kosambi here buddha give a discourse known as bodhirajakuma sutta. It deals with the necessary qualities of head and heart of a monk.
